Please note that some of the suggested works, though grade-level appropriate, do contain more mature subject matter. If you have any questions about whether or not a work is suitable, feel free to ask your current English teacher or other faculty member.
You are expected to read four books this summer, and depending on your course load, the books you must read will be more or less determined. For the upper school, if you have four or more books required because of the classes you are taking, then you have fulfilled your summer reading commitment. The majority of students, however, will read one required book for next year's English class, two from the grade-level list, and one of their own choosing. For example, a sophomore might read
1) Frankenstein (required)
2) Angela's Ashes (from the grade level list)
3) Too Late the Phalarope (from the grade level list)
4) A Lesson Before Dying (her choice).
Please read the section pertaining to your grade level for more specific information. AP and honors students should make sure that they have the correct list from their teachers as some classes not listed (such as AP Art History or AP U.S. Government) may require summer reading.
For the first time ever, we are allowing you to check out your summer reading books from the library (due back the first day of school)!!! Hurry before they're gone! The library will be open on Wednesdays from 9-12. We're closed June 24th & August 12th.
Have a great summer & happy reading!
